You walked into your kitchen and your sink is sitting in the cabinet below the counter. Or it’s hanging by the plumbing, pulling away from the stone. Either way — not a great moment.
Here’s exactly what to do.
—
## Step 1 — Don’t Panic
A dropped undermount sink looks dramatic but it’s a fixable problem. In most cases the countertop is fine, the sink is fine, and a professional remount gets everything back to normal the same day. You don’t need a new countertop. You probably don’t even need a plumber.
—
## Step 2 — Turn Off the Water
If there’s any chance of leaks or the plumbing connections are stressed, turn off the water supply valves under the sink. They’re the two knobs on the pipes coming out of the wall or cabinet floor — turn them clockwise until they stop.
You don’t need to disconnect anything. Just shut off the supply so there’s no risk while the sink is unsupported.
—
## Step 3 — Don’t Try to Hold It Up With Something
It sounds logical but propping a heavy undermount sink up with a bucket or a piece of wood while you figure out next steps can stress the plumbing connections and make the job harder to fix properly. If the sink has fully dropped, leave it where it is. If it’s partially hanging, same thing — leave it.
—
## Step 4 — Check the Countertop
Look at the underside of the countertop around the sink cutout. You’re checking for cracks or chips that happened when the sink dropped. Minor chipping around the cutout edge is common and usually repairable in the same visit as the remount. A full crack through the stone is more serious — send photos to a professional before assuming the worst.
—
## Step 5 — Send a Photo and Get a Quote
Take a photo of the sink, the countertop underside if you can, and the cabinet interior. A good fabricator or repair specialist can look at a photo and tell you within minutes what you’re dealing with and what it’ll cost to fix.
In Edmonton, a standard undermount sink remount typically runs $275–$350. Complex jobs with silicone cleanup, damaged clips, or heavy sinks run $350–$500. Same day service is usually available for an additional fee.

## Why Did My Sink Fall Off?
The most common reasons:
**Adhesive failure** — the epoxy or silicone used to bond the sink to the underside of the countertop breaks down over time, especially in kitchens with a lot of heat and moisture cycling.
**Clip failure** — most undermount sinks use a combination of adhesive and mounting clips. If the clips were installed incorrectly or loosen over time, the sink can drop even if the adhesive is partially intact.
**Water damage** — prolonged exposure to moisture in the cabinet below can weaken the bond and the surrounding wood, eventually causing the whole assembly to let go.
**Original installation issues** — sometimes sinks are installed without enough adhesive, without clips, or with the wrong products. These fail faster than a properly done install.
—
## Can I Remount It Myself?
Technically yes. Realistically, DIY sink remounts fail more often than professional ones for one reason: prep work. The old adhesive has to be completely removed from both the underside of the stone and the sink rim before remounting. If you skip that step or rush it, the new adhesive won’t bond properly and the sink drops again — sometimes faster than the first time.
If you’re comfortable working in a tight cabinet, have the right adhesive, and are willing to take your time on prep — it’s doable. If you want it done right the first time without the risk of a repeat, call a professional.
—
## How Long Does a Remount Take?
Most professional remounts take 2–3 hours on site. That includes removing the sink, full cleanup of old adhesive and silicone, proper prep, reattachment, and resealing. Your kitchen is back to normal the same day.
